Digits

Today we experimented with creating numbers with digits.
Digits are the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. 
10 is a two digit number because it has both zero and one. 


When I teach children how to say numbers I teach them about the houses.
There's a mama, a little boy, and his pet dog. The little boy and the dog are always together so we have to say their names together. 27 = twenty-eight NOT two tens seven ones.
The mama is the most important so we have to say her name... Hundreds.
The comma tells us to say thousands.
So when we're looking at numbers I want the kiddos to make the houses, and label the place values (see below)
Then they say the number in the house (just like they would in second grade)
So the number below starts off with four hundred thirty-two. Then they get to the comma and that tells them to say the word THOUSAND. Then they say the numbers in the house, eight hundred thirty-one.
So the whole number all together is four hundred thirty-two thousand, eight hundred thirty one!
