Distributive property

The distributive property of multiplication says that you can regroup a multiplication sentence in different ways and still get the same product.
For example 7 x 6 is the same as (5x6)+(2x6)
Five groups of six is 30.
Two groups of six is 12.
30+12 = 42

This is good because if we get stuck on a fact, or it's too big, we can use what we know!

Unit Four- MULTIPLICATION

On to Unit FOUR!

Unit Summary:
Students develop an understanding of multiplication and division of whole numbers through the use of a variety of representations. Students relate multiplication and division as inverse operations.

Big Ideas:
 Multiplication of whole numbers can be modeled using arrays, number lines, and area models.
 Division can be represented by partitioning or equal shares.
 Multiplication and division are inverse operations.

Essential Questions:
 How can arrays be used to represent multiplication?
 How is repeated addition related to multiplication?
 How can a number line be used to represent multiplication?
 How does skip counting relate to multiplication?
 What does it mean for something to be shared equally?
 How is repeated subtraction related to division?
 How are multiplication and division related?

Some of my favorite ways to teach multiplication are to play games.
Dominoes, cups, and a deck of cards are all you need!

Here's some online math games to practice those facts!!!
