Rounding Relay

Today we practiced our rounding skills by doing a rounding relay.
The kiddos lined up into two groups and I had two different numbers written on the board.
One by one the kids had to do the different steps to rounding.
1. Underline the correct place value.
2. Put a box around the number next to it.
3. Decide does that number say to rest or go up?
4. Write the answer down!

Pentapus and Dr. Dower

Dr. Dower came today to talk to us about HEAT and how heat can change matter.

This goes with our TEKS:
  • 5(A) I classify matter by physical properties, including shape, relative mass, relative temperature, texture, flexibility, and whether material is a solid or liquid;
  • 5(B) I will compare changes in materials caused by heating and cooling.
  • 5(C) I will demonstrate that things can be done to materials to change
  • 6(A) I will investigate the effects on an object by increasing or decreasing amounts of light, heat, and sound energy.
  • 2(D) I record and organize data using pictures, numbers, and words.
  • 2(E) I will communicate observations and justify explanations using my own data.
  • 1(A) I will identify and demonstrate safe practices like wearing safety goggles, washing hands, and using materials appropriately.
  • 1(B) I will  describe the importance of safe practices.

First, we introduced the Pentapus and where he lives. He lives on a planet that ONLY has water. He doesn't know about different states of matter because he only has liquid. He breathes liquid, he drinks liquid, he lives in liquid.

Graphing

Started our DATA UNIT today!!

Vocabulary:
Data- Information
Categories- Ways to separate things (blue is a category of color)
Categorical Data- Data that is not numbers (example, favorite color, sport you play, etc)
Bar Graph- Graph that uses bars to compare data
Dot Plot- Graph that shows dots above a label to show data
Frequency Table- table that shows how often something happens
Pictograph- Graph that uses pictures to show data
Titles- Next to graphs that explain what the graph is able
Labels- Y and X axis should be labeled to explain the data
Scaled Intervals- Explain how close the numbers are

The data this graph shows is about chocolate ice cream.
The categories are: rocky road, dark chocolate, Reeses Pieces, chocolate, mouse tracks.
The least amount was rocky road.
The most amount was chocolate and Reeses Pieces.
Reeses Pieces had 2 more votes than dark chocolate.
Chocolate had 2 more votes than mouse tracks.
Rocky road has the fewest votes.
This graph was a bar graph.

The data shows about kids having different pets.
The categories in this graph were: dogs, snakes, cats, turtles, fish, birds.
The least amount was snakes.
The most amount was fish.
Dogs and birds had the same number.
There are 4 more people have dogs than snakes.
There are 3 fewer turtles than birds.

Stations

In class I like to have a variety of different activities.
In our science station today we talked about the prosperities of matter.
We looked at magnetism, mass, floating/sinking, and texture.

We practiced our rounding skills using a new way, and we used technology and got on Reflex, MobyMax, or Prodigy.

Kahoot Game

Oh Kahoot how I love thee!! 😍
My students LOVE testing their knowledge and competing using this website.
I put it on my main computer and give them iPads and put them in little teams.
They get SO into it and it's the perfect way to review.
It's not super great for assessing them but there's plenty of ways to do that. I want my kids to enjoy math too!

Rounding

In third grade kiddos are expected to be able to round and estimate numbers.
This is the TEK:  represent a number on a number line as being between two consecutive multiples of 10; 100; 1,000; or 10,000 and use words to describe relative size of numbers in order to round whole numbers

I teach rounding by having kiddos think of number lines as hills.
The middle of the hill separates the numbers that round down and the numbers that round up.
I want them to really understand that we're looking at which number it is closest to.
There are many tricks to teaching rounding but I'd rather them understand the concept first!

Expanded Notation

Now that we've covered expanded form, we're ready for expanded notation!
Expanded notation is when you take the digit and multiply it times the value.

In the number 79,413 you would have
(7 x 10,000) + (9 x 1,000) + (4 x 100) + (1 x 10) + (3 x 1)
