Adding and Subtracting Fractions

4.3A represent a fraction a/b as a sum of fractions 1/b, where a and b are whole numbers and b > 0, including when a > b; S

4.3E represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions
with equal denominators using objects and pictorial models that build to the number line and properties of operations; R
4.3F evaluate the reasonableness of sums and differences of fractions using benchmark fractions 0, 1⁄4 , 1⁄2 , 3⁄4 , and 1, referring to the same whole; S

BrainPop has some great stuff about Fractions.

Math night

I am Math Chair this year and I am planning Math Night.
I am so excited because this year is going to be amazing.
We're going to have:
  • Math games for every grade level
  • Dr. Dower doing exciting experiments in the library
  • Osokemon Cards
  • Raffle for prizes and gift cards
  • Cheerleaders
  • Snacks!
Come and show your support for MATH!
Come and get free stuff!

Come see what Dr. Dower is going to do this time!!

Comparing Fractions

The TEKS for today are:

4.3C determine if two given fractions are equivalent using a variety of methods; S
4.3D compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators and represent the comparison using the symbols >, =, or <; R

Today we compared fractions with different denominators.
We first find the least common denominator (LCD)
Then we convert each fraction so that the denominators are the LCD.
Then we can compare the fractions.
So the LCD of 10 and 6 is 30.
I have to multiply BOTH the denominator and the numerator.
Then I can compare the fractions.

The LCD of 7 and 10 is 70.

Science Fair!

We had some really wonderful science fair projects this year. I'm very proud of how hard our children worked.
Huge shout out to our science teacher, Ms. Hart.
She helped with FIFTY-TWO science projects.

Games

Games are a great way to reinforce concepts I have already taught.
I love matching games and there are so many great free online resources for my students when they use the iPad and computer.

Mathplayground is a FABULOUS website.

http://gregtangmath.com/games has some really fun games especially for number sense.

Another great one is mathplay.com

Internet4classrooms is awesome too.

http://mathquiz.biz/ is nice because it is timed.

Here are some games divided by topic:

Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Here are the TEKS!
4.3B decompose a fraction in more than one way into a sum of fractions with the same denominator using concrete and pictorial models and recording results with symbolic representations; S

Today we are working on the above TEKS.
We're working on how to go from a mixed number (a fraction and a whole) to an improper fraction (a fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator).

For example
One whole and five out of six
1 and 5/6
can be made into
11/6
because I know 1 = 6/6
6/6 + 5/6 = 11/6

Fractions and Decimals

Fractions and decimals are directly related. Today we explored that relationship!

This is the page we looked at on the board. You can find this and many others on my decimal pack.
