Sound Energy

Today we learned about SOUND energy!

First we started with a quick write about what we remember about sound.
Then we shared this with our neighbors.
Then we got on the carpet and discussed it as a group.
We reviewed words like pitch, volume, vibration, and waves.

Then for the fun part!!

Our fabulous music teacher lent me the materials I need to be able to show off our claim.
Our claim was.....
Sound is caused by vibrations.
Our experiments had to support our claim.

Our first experiment was that when I hit the symbol, the kiddos got to come up and feel the symbol. They could feel the vibrations and when their hands stopped the symbol from vibrating.... the sound stopped too!!

Our next experiment was to talk with our hands on our throats. We could feel our throats vibrating when we talked loudly. When we whispered there was hardly a vibration at all.

The last experiment involved water. I hit the instrument and then placed apart of it in the water and we could see the water moving in waves from the vibrations.

Problem Solving

Yesterday we talked about checking to see if your answer is reasonable. Reasonable means it makes sense.
We can check using rounding or compatible numbers.
Compatible numbers are numbers that go well together.
For example, 6 and 4 are compatible because they make 10.

Today we're talking about multi-step problem. This means that a problem requires more than one operation.

Ms. Jefferson has 10 candies. Ms. Dower has 15 candies. Then Mr. Ramirez comes and eats 3 of those candies. How many candies do your teachers have left?
In the above problem a student has to first add the 10 + 15 and the subtract 3.

When we took the graphing assessment I noticed so many of my students missed the questions that required two steps.

In the above problem the child has to be able to read the graph, figure out how many are on Tuesday and Wednesday combined. Then subtract the number on Thursday from that.
So my bar model would look like this!

Light Energy

Yesterday I went to a fabulous training that was all about writing in science.
Because I'm an impatient person, I had to get started on it right away.
Today, I had the kiddos start with a quick write about why light is important to us.
We made a list of those ideas.
Then I picked one of them to be our "claim."

I picked the most obvious one. Light helps us see.

Then we did some experiments with and without light. That was the collecting evidence/data. Then we analyzed that data by talking about it.
Last, we wrote about our claim and our evidence to support it.

Number Lines

Today we really dived into using number lines as a strategy for solving subtraction.
There are two ways to do it.
We can start at the big number and then make jumps back until we've jumped the whole number.
We can start at the little number and make jumps until we get to the big number.
I personally like the second method because I think it is easier to add than subtract.
